Windows desktop / FileTreeLister

Fast folder listings. Clean exports.

Features

Everything needed to make a folder legible.

Useful for release notes, handovers, audits, backups and those drives labelled “misc” that have been quietly judging you since 2014.

01

Live expandable tree

Files and folders appear in an expandable hierarchy as the scan runs, with Path, Type and Size visible in the main window.

02

Folder totals

See calculated folder sizes directly in the tree with automatic KB, MB and GB formatting — useful even on something as large as C:\Windows.

03

Structured exports

CSV output includes hierarchy depth, names, relative and full paths, item type, directory flags and size data for proper spreadsheet analysis.

04

Cancel safely

Stop a long scan without freezing the application or wrestling Windows Task Manager.

05

Remembered settings

The last selected folder and export preferences are retained between sessions.

06

Open source

Source code is published on GitHub under the MIT licence.

How it works

Choose. Scan. Export.

Select a folder or drive, click Go and watch the hierarchy populate. The example below scans C:\Windows and completes with 277,231 items before exporting the same structure to CSV.

Choose a folder

Browse to a normal folder, archive, external drive or full drive root.

Run the scan

The tree fills in live while file counts and folder sizes are calculated.

Export the result

Create a CSV, TXT or PDF copy for sharing, checking or record-keeping.

FileTreeLister in action

A real Windows scan and the resulting CSV.

These are genuine FileTreeLister outputs shown at their original 3:2 proportions: first the live application scanning C:\Windows, followed by the exported CSV opened in Excel.

Good for

Release notes, audits, archives and handovers.

  • Documenting software or project releases.
  • Checking backup and archive contents.
  • Creating file inventories for audits or handovers.
  • Reviewing old drives before deletion or migration.

Windows notes

Lightweight and straightforward.

The downloadable Windows build does not require Python on the target computer. Windows SmartScreen may warn about an unsigned executable, which is common for small independent software releases.

Open source and free to use.

Inspect the source, download the Windows build or support further development.
